Faculty Development Programme

23rd, 24th& 25th Feb.2013

Three day Faculty Development Programme was inaugurated on 23rd Feb 2013, Saturdayat 10.30 a.m at Vishveshwaraya Hall, ICEM, Parandwadi. This session was graced by Dr. Prachee Javadekar, Founder & Director, Javadekar Education Consultancy Pvt. Ltd, Dr. Ramesh V. Kulkarni, Director ICEM &Dr. Poornashankar, Vice Principal ICEM. Mrs. Javadekar appreciated the initiative taken by ICEM and stated that the FDP will prove to be an excellent effort made by the institute. She highlighted the importance and objectives of organizing faculty development programs. She shared her views with the faculty participants that if faculty wants to develop themselves and their students, then attending such faculty development programs would enhance their skills of teaching concepts practically. She expressed that this program will enable all teachers to apply the principle of education technology in day to day teaching learning process which includes appropriate teaching, methods of class control, preparing good question papers, participative learning etc.

Topic: Uniform Teaching Methodology

Various topics for teaching Learning were discussed by him. The information of important web sites was given e.g. NPTEL, Open courseware of MIT,edX, Khan academy, etc.He explained about time maintenance, course planning, and course outcomes. He also explained about research based instructional strategies:

Session 1
Resource Person: Mrs.Prachi Jawadekar
Topic: Effective classroom management

She had conducted various group activities for faculty such as classroom awareness activity.She also detailed about the classroom environment by explaining perception, teachers behavior, students behavior, resources and content. She also explained the role of teacher and the teacher must be :

  • Self-disciplined
  • Entertainer
  • Educator
  • Instructor
  • Dictator

She also explained about the qualities of the teacher such as:

  • Authoritarian teacher
  • Authoritative teacher
  • Indifferent teacher
  • Laissez faire

Session 2
Resource Person: Dr. S. G. Bapat
Topic: Team building

He showed a wonderful video. Also various games were conducted for faculty which shows teamwork is very important for achieving goals.

Dr. S. G. Bapat had explained how the team can be build up & its importance using different Games. He had explained the difference between mob, group &team. He defined the team is a group of individuals that share, collaborate assist one another &working together towards common goal.

Game1: Initially Group of 2 people &then group of 6 people give a task to lift up from floor without touching the ground with the help of each other’s assistance it is possible.

Game2: By taking a team of 20 people tries to make a circle by proper hand sharing.

Game3: Make a group of 60 people & pass a ring from one individual to other within less time. Minimum time taken was 2 min.

Game 4: keep a bottle from one reference line to a maximum possible distance then by using some support it is possible to improve the distance. It gives you a difference in performance & potential.

Video:He had shown a very interesting video of the individual working in a company. In the video, He showed a character who is not good team member due to that he loses number of opportunities.He is never ready to share his knowledge & never help the other which made him self-centered& not worthy to work in team.

This video helps us to understand how should be the good team member.

He explained the stages of Team Building by playing Management game.

1) Forming     :    Form a group

2) Storming    :    Motivate them to achieve common goal

3) Norming    :    Mutually accept each other

4) Performing  :    Problem solving

He forms 4 brands working for Ayurvedic formulation & concludes that if all team members contribute & take proper decision then there is improvement of brands.

Conclusion: Team building has various advantages like division of work, help in decision making, improvement in efficiency.

Overall session was very informative &based on activities which helped us to understand the importance of team building.

Topic: Engineering case study

He has explained about ‘‘case study application for teaching engineering’. He showed one short film about ‘Land of Opportunity’. He also explained about shiksha and diksha . He showed about 21st century world with respect to global economy, international competition, finite resources, environmental sustainability, defense reinvestment, cognitive revolution etc. He also showed the importance of learning Pyramid i.e. lecture, reading, audio-video, demonstration, group discussion, practical etc. He also explained about passive learning and participatory learning.

In post lunch session he explained Bloom’s Taxonomy by showing chartCreating—evaluating—analyzing—applying- understanding—remembering—synthesis. Then he gave the emphasis on that there should be higher order thinking than lower order thinking. In the last session he has given one research paper titled ‘Entry level Engineering Course is important in the development of young Engineers’. All groups have studied their paper and presented. The session was good and it threw light to teaching engineering.

He took two case studies first “on Meet my student Nitin Gore (VI semester student)” and second on “A case study approach to freshman engineering courses”.
