Automation in the Construction Industry
Published on October 21, 2022
India is the 7th largest economy & 3rd largest purchasing power parity (PPP) in the world as per the economic survey. In this large economy, the construction industry contributes 10% to the gross domestic product in the development of India. In its present state, India is a developing nation & huge infrastructure development is on the way.
The construction industry largely depends on manpower as the main resource and many constructions practitioner still believe in working manually. If automation in construction is practiced wisely, development in construction activities will be enhanced & thereby decrease the construction time and this will provide large economic advantages. More importantly, automation in construction enhances the quality of the work & provides a safe environment for working for the laborers.
There is a wide scope in construction automation, and it involves various stages of construction e.g., construction material production, operation, and maintenance of buildings construction components prefabrication, on-site & offsite construction, and demolition and recycling of structures.
Automation in the construction industry provides the following advantages:
- Provide safety to workers while working in normal & extreme conditions.
- Accuracy and precision are achieved in the stipulated time
- Productivity & Efficiency is achieved with reduced costs.
- Machines can perform tasks that are beyond human control
- Construction targets can be achieved with desired quality & higher accuracy.
Presently, various automated construction techniques are being implemented in various construction projects like:
- Roads: Simulations software, excavating machines like JCB, Dozers, Automated paving machines etc.
- Buildings: Simulations software like BIM for product life cycle monitoring and controlling, Boom placers, advanced excavating tools, and machinery.
- Railways: Automatic train control systems.
- Tunnels: Tunnel boring machines. Implementation of automated technologies in the construction industry is the need of the hour today. Further, to match the pace of the global construction race new automated technologies need to be updated on a timely basis.
