Emission Regulations: A challenge for Mechanical Engineers
Published on October 21, 2022
The world is changing speedily new inventions are taking over all the markets, especially in the power sector (Automotive, Power gen, etc.) which are helping the customer to improve their efficiency smooth operations profitability, etc. However, with the added features in power generation products or applications, there is undoubtedly a carbon percentage increase. How to hear the standards or regulations for government laws comes into the picture that x product or application must comply with the emission regulations stated by the government of a particular region. (E.g. Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES) BS4, BS6 for the India Automotive market, NS6 for the China Automotive market, Euro 6, Tier 4 for the US market, etc.)
Now, this is where the mechanical engineers’ work starts. Let’s consider an example. We have launched BS6 emission norms in April 2020 for the Automotive segment which is asking for a tremendous reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) excretion from vehicles compared to BS4 norms date for mechanical engineering had a tough role to map their existing product portfolio with respect to these norms confirm if they have any available product to come up with a new project for the engine or vehicle development where they would do a selection for the design of emission systems (Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), etc.), Fuel systems, combustion recipe change, etc.
Today if we look at the engines or vehicles offered by the leading brands in the market we can see the use of cutting-edge technology still affordable to customers and meets government regulations. This kind of example gives us good confidence that the industry will grow with good mechanical engineers and will continue excelling in technology development to offer new solutions for upcoming emission norms.
